The Gilded Cage: Whittington Hall Hospital 1912-1996
A moving account of life at Whittington Hall Hospital in Chesterfield, an institution originally founded by the Reverend Harold Nelson Burden to house and care for 'mental defectives'. The programme reveals the living conditions of the patients which, thanks to Reverend Burden's enlightened views about people with learning disabilities, were a vast improvement from the Workhouses. It also describes how patient care evolved over time, until its closure in 1996. This fascinating history is brought to life by archive photographs and interviews with the people who actually lived and worked there.
